1970s: in touch with nature...by keeping up appearances

An uninhibited exhibitionist who'd been a part-time model in her 20s and was still incredibly well-preserved in her late 40s and early 50s despite almost zero exercise or discipline (fabulous metabolism she had back then), my mom would routinely parade around the house naked, for no particular reason. This followed on her (and earlier, also my dad) taking my family to a nude beach, where the ratio of nude to non-nude bathers was perhaps 50/50. My mom always made such a case for how swimming in the nude was so, so much better; took pictures of my brother and me as toddlers, cavorting nude on the sand (this was the early 70s, so people bringing nude pictures of young children to the photo shop for developing didn't get questioned then). It was one thing for us when we were toddlers and young kids, but she didn't get it when my oldest brother, approaching puberty, got REALLY uncomfortable with the whole thing. What a prude he was --- that was the implication.

It wasn't primarily about swimming and having fun; it was about swimming and having fun in the nude, then being smug and self-congratulatory about it later...aren't we all so enlightened, after all? Look at the riff-raff on the public beach, she'd say (either obliquely or straight out); we have a private beach membership, which we got not because we've got lots of money, but rather because we are so disproportionately connected due to our unusual charm, savoir-faire, and intellect.

In the divorce phase, she'd sometimes ask me for a backrub (lying face down on her bed, stark naked), almost whining like a child about it. Once I began to comply (feeling uncomfortable and resentful, even then), she'd tell me "You know, nobody touches me anymore, except for this" (poor me, I have no boyfriend at the moment...by the way, have I mentioned yet today how terrible your father is and how inhumane our divorce was/is?). So I, her 11 or 12-year-old daughter, am responsible for somehow making up for the fact that she is missing sexual satisfaction in her life? Oh, OK. At the very point where my boundaries with her should have been strengthening, she put apparently conscious effort into eroding them.
